Belle Isle – Michigan’s 102nd State Park

April 1, 2014

The third largest island in the Detroit River, at 1.5 square miles (982 acres), Belle Isle became Michigan’s 102nd State Park on November 12, 2013.

This past weekend, I visited Belle Isle State Park, not once, but twice; and I am very excited about the future of this Metro Detroit gem!

On Friday, I met six of my fellow “Ann Arbor Shutterbugs” for a “Sunset Walking Tour”.  Sadly, Mother Nature did not cooperate.  It was cloudy, cold, and windy with no visible sunset.  But I truly enjoyed the camaraderie of my fellow photographers.

On Sunday, Mother Nature rewarded us with sunshine, warmer temperatures, and less wind!  So I talked my husband into an impromptu drive to Belle Isle for what I expected would be a beautiful sunset, the one we had hoped for on Friday!  Needless to say, I was not disappointed.

After the sunset, we walked to the nearby “James Scott Memorial Fountain”.   The Vermont white marble fountain was unveiled on May 31, 1925.  It is 510 feet across, and its central fountain could spray water 125 feet into the air (currently inoperable).  It has 109 water outlets in the shape of dolphins, turtles, lions and human figures. Nearby, there was a bronze statue of the infamous James Scott!

Yes, I said infamous!  According to Historic Detroit“The Scott Memorial Fountain is the jewel of Belle Isle – and a monument to a womanizing scoundrel”.  It was a scandalizing story for the times, but it pales in comparison to Detroit’s more recent history.  If you are interested in learning the scandalous details, click on the above links.  Regardless of its controversial history, the beauty of the fountain cannot be denied.  I look forward to the day the water sprays again!

Below are photos from both excursions.  Enjoy!
