The Beauty and Wonder of the Pacific Dolphin

On my recent trip to the West Coast, I took advantage of a Whale Watching Cruise offered by Davey’s Locker (http://www.daveyslocker.com/) located on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California.  November is not exactly a peak season for whale watching, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to actually “sail the Pacific”!

The weather was absolutely perfect and we saw plenty of dolphin along the coast between Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.  The official count by the crew of the Ocean Explorer was 50 Common Dolphin, 40 Bottlenosed Dolphin, 10 Offshore Bottlenosed Dolphin, and 10 Risso’s Dolphin.  Below are few photos from this delightful excursion.

1. This was our first glance of Pacific Dolphin and we were excited to learn that this was a rare sighting of Risso’s Dolphin.

2. Unfortunately these dolphin didn’t allow our Captain to get too close and they soon meandered off into the great blue yonder.

3. However, our patience was soon rewarded when we came across a pod of the ever popular Bottlenosed Dolphin (think “Flipper” and dolphin shows at aquariums).  These dolphin were so entertaining, we could have easily spent hours watching them breech and surf.

4. Then as we began our return to the Balboa Peninsula, we discovered a large pod of Common Dolphin.  These are the most common dolphin (pun intended) usually seen on these whale watches at this time of the year.  They are considerably smaller than the Bottlenosed Dolphin.

5. And last, but not least, we saw plenty of birds frolicking with the dolphin.

If you ever find yourself in Southern California, be sure to “sail the Pacific” and enjoy the beauty and wonder of the Pacific Dolphin.
