Photo-of-the-Day / 2012-04-17 / A Michigan Bald Eagle

April 18, 2012

There was a time, in the not so distant past, when the sighting of a Bald Eagle in Michigan was an extreme rarity. This majestic national bird, once on the Endangered Species List, has grown in numbers and its territory has expanded throughout Michigan.

I had the opportunity to photograph this particular Bald Eagle in Gladwin, Michigan in April 2010.  I was attending a weekend scrapbooking retreat held at The Springs, a Christian camp and year-round retreat center located along  a meandering river.  Apparently it had staked out its territory in that area and graced us with an appearance.

It cooperated quite nicely for those of us who wanted its photograph.  I just happened to have my DSLR along with the 70-300 zoom.  I didn’t have a tripod, so I leaned against a tree and propped my arms to steady the camera.  Although it was actually perched in a tree across the river, I think I managed a decent photo with this lens and makeshift tripod. Below is the original photo before I cropped and tweaked it a bit.

It was quite an amazing sight and I’m so glad I have this photo as a remembrance.
