Cheryl ~ Cheryl ~ Cheryl

Two years ago tonight my husband’s sister lost her battle with pneumonia, a complication from Hepatits C, which she valiantly fought for several years.  In memory of my loving sister-in-law and dear friend of more than 30 years, I have posted this photo of Cheryl, which just happens to be my all-time favorite of her.

Cheryl was not the easiest person to photograph!  Some would say that is a bit of an understatement.  She was always, and I do mean always, turning away from the camera, hiding behind people, to escape being caught on film.  Over the years, it became a game of cat and mouse between us.

Patience and determination allowed me to capture this photo of Cheryl while she enjoyed a family reunion in August of 2006.  The original image is a little more full-bodied, but I cropped it to give it a more portrait-like quality.  That and an “auto” adjustment to the white balance are the only post production techniques applied.

A week from now, our family will celebrate what would have been Cheryl’s 57th birthday.  We will share our memories, have a few laughs and probably shed a few tears.  And while we are remembering Cheryl through our thoughts and words, I will be quietly thanking her for not turning away from the camera that August day, giving all of us this beautiful memory to treasure and preserve forever.
